IUGG geodesy PDF comprised of eight semi-autonomous Associations, each responsible for a specific range of topics or themes within the overall scope of Union activities. The fourth edition of this textbook has been thoroughly revised in order to reflect the central role which geodesy has achieved in the past ten years.
The Global Geodetic Observing System established by the IAG utilizes a variety of techniques to determine the geometric shape of the earth and its kinematics, the variations of earth rotation, and the earth’s gravity field. Space techniques play a fundamental role, with recent space missions also including gravity field recovery. Terrestrial techniques are important for regional and local applications, and for validating the results of the space missions. Global and regional reference systems are now well established and widely used. They also serve as a basis for geo-information systems. The analysis of the time variation of the geodetic products provides the link to other geosciences and contributes to proper modelling of geodynamic processes.
The book follows the principal directions of geodesy, providing the theoretical background as well as the principles of measurement and evaluation methods. Selected examples of instruments illustrate the geodetic work. An extensive reference list supports further studies.
The book is intended to serve as an introductory textbook for graduate students as well as a reference for scientists and engineers in the fields of geodesy, geophysics, surveying engineering and geomatics.

IUGG holds General Assemblies at four-year intervals, and each of its Associations organize Scientific Assemblies as well as topical symposia in the intervening period between General Assemblies. IUGG is committed to the principle of free exchange of data and knowledge among nations, and encourages unreserved scientific participation by all peoples. The official languages of the Union are French and English. ECOSOC established the Committee of Experts as the apex intergovernmental mechanism for making joint decisions and setting directions with regard to the production, availability and use of geospatial information within national, regional and global policy frameworks. Technical reports submitted by regional entities and member states are not reviewed or edited by the secretariat. These reports facilitate the technical discussion of the subject matters on the agenda and help clarify technical issues.

The flattenings are related to other parameters of the ellipse. 3142 m, so that the difference of the major and minor semi-axes is 21. Earth on a computer screen would be sized as 300px by 299px. Because this would be virtually indistinguishable from a sphere shown as 300px by 300px, illustrations typically greatly exaggerate the flattening in cases where the image needs to represent Earth’s oblateness.
